Anthony and I met in 2012 when UND played Boston University in Grand Forks. Jocelyne and I showed Anthony around the UND weight room as a favor to Mike Boyle, our strength coach from the national team. But that pretty uneventful, courtesy tour was the extent of our contact until our paths crossed again about ten months later in the Woburn gym owned by Mike Boyle, where we worked out during the national team’s East Coast residency leading up to the Sochi Olympics. A Boston native, Anthony had a longtime association with Mike, working with Boston University’s men’s hockey team and numerous professional and collegiate athletes.

After a few months of seeing him regularly in the gym, I took a stab at wishing him and Boston University luck before one of their weekend series. I messaged him on Facebook, which opened the door to more conversation. Then he asked me out on a date. It was a Sunday, the same day the New England Patriots were playing in the AFC championship game, so our date had to wait until after the game.

Anthony and I spent four hours at the restaurant without ordering food. Then we went out for dinner the next night and the night after that, and it was clear pretty quickly that both of us were cut from the same cloth, even though our backgrounds and upbringings were drastically different. His attitude and work ethic matched mine. “Be humble or be humbled,” he said.

By the Olympics, we were unofficially a couple. Soon after we returned from Sochi, I decided that I would return to Boston in the spring for an internship, to play hockey, train, to finish my graduate degree—and also to live with Anthony. I was excited about my future with him, but I dreaded putting fifteen hundred miles between Jocelyne and me. Saying goodbye to her was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

I left for Boston at the end of a weekend. I was driving back east by myself—twenty hours. I hadn’t been in the car very long when Anthony called me to ask how I was doing after saying goodbye to Jocelyne. I muttered something unintelligible. “I’ll call you back,” he said.

He understood how hard it was for me to not be around my twin every single day. Even now, we can spend most of the day together and not long after we get home, one of us will call or text the other. “Weren’t you two just together?” one or both of our husbands will ask, and we will nod yeah, and say, “I had a question,” or, “It was important,” even though it wasn’t. We might grow up, and we have, but we will never grow out of all the wonders and invisible ties of being identical twins. Even though I have Anthony and Jocelyne has Brent, we are still each other’s people too.

With Anthony, in fact, I got a future husband, and Jocelyne and I both got a coach.
